Low carb diet plans are a very hot diet topic at the moment. The Dr Atkins Diet, which is one of the most popular diets around, is based on having a low carbohydrate intake. The diet involves cutting down on the intake of carbohydrate foods such as bread, pasta and potatoes and replacing these foods with other non-carb based foods.

What are carbohydrates?

The body uses carbohydrates during exercise, which are broken down into fuel for the muscles - all carbohydrates, except for dietary fiber, are ultimately broken down into simple sugar molecules by digestive processes.

Limiting the amount of carbohydrates in the body limits this available fuel - and as a result the body has to resort to burning fat stores for its energy needs. So when you then exercise it becomes much more effective in the reduction of fat.

What to expect from a low carb diet

When you start a new Atkins diet plan you may experience a few days of fatigue while the body is changing the way it metabolizes food.

You can then expect to feel more energetic without the mood changes that accompany the fluctuations in blood sugar when you eat a diet high in carbs.

What can you eat on the low carb diet?

A low carb diet places dietary emphasis on protein sources as opposed to whole grain foods. The Atkins plan doesn't set limits on the amount of food you eat. It only sets limits on the type of food you eat.

These foods are made up mostly of protein and fat, as opposed to carbohydrates.
