Low Carbohydrate Diets

Low Carbohydrate Diets – Which One

Low carbohydrate diets have been around for over thirty years. Right now they’re experiencing a renewed surge in popularity. There are several versions of these reduced carb diets. The three most popular are Atkins, South Beach and The Zone. All of these diets are similar in that they call for a lower carb intake, but there are differences. For instance Atkins is a four phase diet plan.

South Beach has three phases and The Zone has only one. Atkins is perhaps the most restrictive of the lower carb diets. During the induction phase, which lasts for a minimum of two weeks, but can be much longer depending on how much weight you have to lose, you’re restricted to 20 carb grams a day.

Once you’ve chosen your low carbohydrates diet you need to be sure that you’re taking a multivitamin and possibly a mineral supplement to replace the calcium, magnesium and potassium that you’re excreting, especially during the early stages of your low carb eating plan. If you adhere to your diet, you’ll lose weight, and the weight loss can be significant. Especially in the beginning. Three or more pounds a week isn’t unusual.

If you never much cared for fruit and tolerate veggies, but love steak, cheese and eggs, the Atkins lower carb diet is for you. However if you hate veggies but like meat and really have to have fruit, consider the South Beach diet. It is much more liberal about reintroducing fruit after the initial very low carb stage of your diet.

The Zone diet doesn’t work in stages, you consistently eat the same amount of carbs, protein and fats. This balance must be precise, 40% of your food intake must be from carbs, 30% protein and 30% fats. So choose your lower carb diet wisely.
