Low Carb Wine

Low Carb Wine – Really?

Many people enjoy a glass of wine after a special meal. Must low carbers give that up? In a word, No! Most dry wines are naturally low in carbohydrates with a carb count of 2-3 grams of carbs per 5 ounce glass. Recently the United States government allowed any wine with less than 7 carb grams per 5 ounce serving to call itself low carb wine.

Brown and Foreman wine and spirits company came out with two new low carb wines in 2004, One 6 Chardonnay and One 9 Merlot. Designed to appeal to low carbohydrate dieters, the wines sell for about ten dollars a bottle and are available at stores like Target, Costco and Walmart. The names of these wines reflect their limited carb counts, the One 6 Chardonnay has a 1.6 gram carb count and the One 9 Merlot, has a 1.9 gram carb count.

In a taste test non professional wine tasters generally ranked the One 6 Chardonnay lower carb wine last, but surprisingly the One 9 Merlot, when tested against two other reduced carb wines in the same price range, came in a solid second. It was found to be “medium bodied, tasted of berries” one taster said “kind of stagnant but I could finish this.” Reduced carbohydrate wines will appeal to the lower carb dieters, not wine connoisseurs.
