Low Carb High Fat Diet

Low Carb High Fat Diet – Which One

A low carb high fat diet seems totally opposed to what we’ve been hearing for years. We have been told a diet high in fat and protein is not healthy, can lead to heart disease, kidney failure and other health problems. However proponents of these diets say eating low carb will keep you healthy and reduce the risk of heart attacks. Who is right? Unfortunately there is no conclusive evidence either way.

Dr. Atkins, in his book “Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution” reports the following symptoms may appear the first few days of low carbs high fat diets: lightheadedness and fatigue. This is probably due to rapid weight loss and he advises these clients to add another serving of vegetables to their evening meal, and to drink lots of water.

Leg cramps at night do to rapid excretion of calcium is another problem during the switch from low fat high carb foods to high fat low carbohydrate meals. This can be alleviated by taking a multivitamin rich in calcium, magnesium and potassium.

According to the Atkins book these symptoms disappear in a day or two. Dr. Atkins warns that anyone with severe kidney disease should NOT do any phase of a low carb high fat eating plan unless ordered to do so by their physician. Also pregnant women or nursing mothers are advised to do only the lifetime maintenance phase of the Atkins diet.

A non scientific survey was done over a period of a year. There were 188 respondents who were asked what problems they had on the Atkins low carbohydrate diet. There were reports of constipation, loss of energy, leg cramps and diarrhea. All temporary problems predicted by Dr. Atkins. So the jury is still out on low carb high fat eating plans.
