Low Carb Atkins Diet – Weight Loss Advice
The low carb Atkins diet may be your key to weight loss success. But
if you’re a carbohydrate addict it might be difficult to stick to. The
Atkins low carbs diet was developed by Dr. Atkins about three decades ago.
This diet, perhaps the most restrictive of the low carb diets, has four
phases.
During the first, or induction, phase of the Atkins diet, you’re restricted
to 20 carb grams daily. This phase of the diet is followed for at least two
weeks and there’s normally rapid weight loss, 3-5 pounds weekly. A sample
daily menu for this phase of the Atkins diet, totaling 14 net carbs and
leaving up to 6 carbs available for lower carb snacking throughout the day,
would be: breakfast - Buttermilk Cinnamon Waffles, lunch - Beef Burrito,
dinner - Turkey Ratatouille, dessert - Chocolate-Mint Mousse.
The second phase of this diet is the ongoing weight loss phase. During this
phase you gradually increase your daily carb intake by five carb grams
weekly until weight loss slows. Sample daily meal plan: breakfast -
Blueberry Scones, lunch - Baked Quesadillas, dinner - Sweet and Sour Pork,
dessert - Coconut Layer Cake. This menu has 27 net carbs.
Pre-maintenance, the third phase of the Atkins diet, begins when you’re
within 5-10 pounds of goal weight. Sample daily meal plan: breakfast -
Cinnamon Buns, lunch - Beef Fajitas with Peppers, dinner - Lasagna, dessert
- Pineapple-Mango Layer Cake. This menu has 39 net carbs.
The fourth, or lifetime maintenance, phase of this diet is where low carb
eating becomes a way of life. Sample daily meal plan: breakfast - Wild
Mushroom and Gruyere Cheese Omelets, lunch - Delhi Chicken Salad, dinner -
Sea Scallops and Lemon Pasta, dessert - Cinnamon Crumb Coffee Cake. This
menu has 54 net carbs.
