History Of The Atkins Diet – Where Did It Start
The history of the Atkins diet began in the 1960’s when Robert C. Atkins , a New York City cardiologist read some articles in the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) about reducing carbohydrate intake. In 1972 he published a book “Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution”. The basis of this book, low carbs and higher fats dieting plan, caused a major uproar among the mainstream medical establishment which favored a high carb low fat diet as they in general still do today.
The Atkins Diet survived the opposition, and in 1972 he released a totally
revised edition of the book, “Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution” and it was
reprinted in 1999. This book sold more than 10 million copies and was on the
New York Times best seller list for 5 years. Another edition was released in
2002 with 7 new chapters and 100 new recipes.
However this is the beginning to crumble as more research shows that this
diet, can lower triglycerides and raise HDL. The Atkins diet has had its ups
and downs, but has recently experienced an upsurge in popularity. Millions
of Americans have done Atkins and kept the weight off, without ill effects.
