Dr. Atkins Diets

Dr. Atkins Diet – Low Carb Eating

Dr. Atkins diet is one of the most popular diets of all time and perhaps the most controversial. The diet was first published in 1972 in “Diet Revolution.” This was the first “major work” promoting a low carbohydrate diet. From the very beginning the mainstream medical community denounced the Atkins diet as unsafe. However nobody has ever produced evidence to prove that Dr. Atkins diets ever harmed a dieter.

To the contrary anecdotal evidence from people on Atkins says that Atkins dieters feel better than they have in years. One participant stayed at the Atkins induction phase for two years. Another respondent reported being on the Atkins diet for almost 20 years still feels well, is maintaining her weight loss and her triglycerides are down.

The Atkins diet is composed of four phases. Induction is the first and most severely limited stage of the diet. The second phase, Ongoing Weight Loss allows you to add a few more carbs each week. The pre-maintenance phase is next. This is where you really slow down your weight loss and learn to eat the Atkins way. The fourth and endless stage of Atkins is called Lifetime Maintenance. This is the way you eat for the rest of your life.

In his book “Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution” Atkins devotes an entire chapter to “Eating in the Real World.” He explains how to deal with temptation by finding substitutes, or having just a taste of a dessert. There are also tips on how to read food labels. Atkins reminds you that along with checking carbs on packaged foods, the nutritional info given is for one serving. So if a package has 4 servings and lists 3 carbs you will consume 12 carbs if you eat it all and blow you diet carb count.
