Atkins Low Carb Diet

Atkins Low Carb Diet – For Life

Though the Atkins low carb diet is gaining in popularity lately, its actually been around for about 30 years. The diet craze started by Dr. Atkins, is a protein lover’s dream and a carbohydrates lover‘s nightmare. Dieters can eat all the meat, eggs and cheese they want, but carb rich foods such as bread, white rice and potatoes are severely limited on the Atkins low carbs diet. The theory behind the Atkins low carbohydrate diet is basically that increasing protein intake while decreasing carb intakes, will change the metabolism thus promoting weight loss.

The first, or induction, phase of the Atkins diet lasts at least two weeks and results in rapid weight loss. At this stage of the diet, Carbs are severely limited to 20 grams daily. The second phase of the diet is the ongoing weight loss phase. Dieters stay here until they’re getting close to goal weight. Daily carb intakes are increased by 5 carb grams weekly until weight loss slows.

The pre-maintenance, or 3rd, phase of the Atkins diet begins when the dieter is within 5-10 pounds of goal weight. During this phase weight loss is purposely slowed to prepare for the next phase. Phase 4 of the diet is known as the lifetime maintenance phase. The dieter has now made a lifestyle change and knows what their maximum carb allowance to maintain goal weight is.
