Atkins Diet Revolution

Atkins Diet Revolution – Time Tested

Just about everyone has heard of the Atkins diet. But what, you may ask, is the Atkins Diet Revolution? Since the 1960’s Dr. Robert Atkins, who developed the diet, has been preaching against the high carb low fat diet still prevalent in the U.S. He says that the rates of heart disease, stroke and diabetes have increased since we as a nation adopted a low fat higher carb diet. The diet revolution Atkins style approach to weight loss, dieting and optimal health is certainly revolutionary.

The mainstream medical community and the Atkins proponents have been butting heads over what the best weight loss diet is, for over 30 years. The Atkins diet allows unlimited amounts of meat , fish, eggs, cheeses, butter and liberal amounts of green leafy vegetables (up to 3 cups a day). But, Atkins restricts things like breads, pasta, starchy vegetables and forbids milk, white flour and white rice. The Atkins opponents favor a diet that balances the different food groups with proteins and fats as the smallest part of a diet.

In more recent times there has been some evidence that the Atkins diet may decrease triglycerides and increase good cholesterol. However the battle still rages over which dietary approach is correct. Dr. Atkins’ revolt has led to over 10 million copies of his book being sold and the book stayed on the best seller list for more than 3 years. Up until his death in 1993 Dr. Atkins preached his diet in his books and on tv talk shows and his company Atkins Nutritionals is continuing the battle.
