Atkins Diet Program – Lose Weight

Tired of yo-yo dieting, gaining weight, taking it off, gaining it back? Then you may be a candidate for the Atkins diet program. If you stick to the diet program you will lose weight, and since it is a lifestyle change you should be able to keep it off.

Atkins diet programs have four steps or phases. They are Induction, Ongoing Weight Loss, Pre-maintenance and finally Lifetime Maintenance. Atkins dieters move through the diet phases at their own pace. Only the induction phase has a time requirement. You must stay at this level of the diet for a minimum of two weeks. This Atkins program teaches you a way of eating that you can follow for the rest of your life.

The induction phase which lasts a minimum of 14 days is the most restrictive phase of the Atkins diet. You are only allowed 20 carb grams a day. You may eat fish, meat, eggs, butter, cheese and cream in abundance, but very little else except green leafy vegetables.

If you can survive this step of the diet program you are home free. The remainder of the Atkins program becomes more liberal with each phase of the diet. Take heart, during this Induction phase of the Atkins diet people lose 2-3 pounds a week.

Phase 2 of the Atkins program allows you to add 5 carbs a week to your daily carb count. The first week 25 grams, then 30 and so on. When you are 3 to 5 pounds from goal, the Atkins program suggests you move on to the third phase of the diet. Now in pre-maintenance you can add 10 grams a week to your carb intake. Before you know it you will be at goal weight and enter lifetime maintenance The Atkins diet is set up so you can stay at this level of Atkins forever.
