Atkins Diet Problems

Atkins Diet Problems – What Can Happen

It seems that many of the reported Atkins diet problems are promulgated by people who never read the book, “Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution.” One small case in point is, it has been reported that during the first phase of the Atkins diet, people are told not to consume any carbs at all. In fact these dieters are told to consume 20 carb grams per day while in this stage of the diet. Another is the risk of kidney disease from the Atkins diet. Dr. Atkins repeatedly states those with kidney disease should not do Atkins.

Another Atkins diet problem is leg cramps due to rapid excretion of calcium, magnesium and or potassium. Atkins suggests that the dieter take supplements to replace these nutrients. Other reported problems with the Atkins diet are lightheadedness and weakness during the first week of the diet. Again Dr. Atkins warns about this and explains the cause and how to treat these symptoms. Dr. Atkins claims that his diet lowers triglycerides and raises good cholesterol and short-term studies back this up. Even opponents of the Atkins diet have to admit this.

Atkins critics complain that weight loss on the Atkins diet slows down considerably after a year on the diet plan. That’s the way Dr. Atkins designed the diet and is due to the increased carbohydrate intake. One of the most common complaints against the Atkins diet is that there are no large-scale long term studies to prove the effectiveness and safety of the diet but then there aren’t any on the other side to prove that the Atkins diet is harmful. Nobody knows for sure but so far the early evidence is in favor of Dr. Atkins.
