List Of Low Carb Foods - What Really is Available

There are a few ways of compiling a list of low carb foods. “Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution” has a chapter called “Food and Recipes to Help You Do Atkins.” It names the reduced carb foods that you should keep in your pantry, refrigerator or freezer. It gives all food categories, right down to spices and herbs. An even more complete list “The Carbohydrate Gram Counter” has everything including white rice, milk and white potatoes, all big no-nos for people on a low carb diet. The Atkins book even has a list of low carbs food allowed at different phases in the plan.

In the first, or induction, phase of a low carb diet, a list of acceptable foods include fish, shellfish, fowl, meats and eggs. You can eat liberal amounts of these. Next is a list of categories such as cheese (3-4oz a day), salad vegetables and garnishes, other vegetable beverages, fats and oils, which you can have in limited amounts. Spices can be used pretty much at will in your lower carb diet. In each subsequent phase there is a list that you can add to your reduced carbs eating plan.

You can find food lists for low carb dieters as simple as meat, fish and eggs to detailed lists with specific categories such as fish, poultry, shellfish, beef, legumes, vegetables, breads, etc. Some web sites even have low carb shopping lists with hints to reading labels so that you don’t fall prey to hidden carbs.
